Case study:
a service to brave servicemen

AirMed has played an important air ambulance role during the Iraq crisis. We have collected injured military personnel from airports such as Brize Norton and Ramstein in Germany, for return to home locations such as Belfast, Dublin and Glasgow to continue their recuperation close to their families.

Lifeport Stretcher in the PA42-720 Cheyenne IIIA.

We frequently fly in to Heathrow and Gatwick to pick up stretcher patients that have arrived on scheduled flights and take them on to destinations in Ireland and Scotland. Our pilots are trained to fly Senecas and Chieftains in traffic patterns amongst much larger aircraft at these busy airports.

AirMed has repatriated patients from most resorts,
including summer resorts such as the Canaries
and the Mediterranean. During the ski season
AirMed fly injured skiers back to the UK to have
further treatment in their local hospital.

We have repatriated patients involved in holiday
disasters and accidents including the coach crash
in Belgium, victims of a train crash in Sardinia,
and a speed boat accident in the Costa Del Sol.
All came back to the UK to continue recovery or
be closer to family and friends. AirMed has also
been involved in high profile repatriations such as with the presenter Richard Hammond from Leeds to
Bristol. His high speed crash when filming for the
show “Top Gear” was widely publicised. This
repatriation was the first time the public saw the
presenter walk following his accident, when he
transferred from our plane to the land ambulance.

To provide a high standard of medical care and
hygiene to the patients who travel with AirMed.
We have contracted the UK’s leading supplier of
textile rental and laundering services - Sunlight to
maintain the high level of cleanliness for the
bedding and towels on our Ambulance flights.

Ambulance

We have been the UK leader in air ambulance services for nearly 20 years and have served all the major assistance and repatriation companies, as well as the NHS. Our ambulance fleet is available 24 hours-a-day and is backed by a committed operations department and by medical support teams when required.

Our mission is to provide the highest quality care for patients requiring secondary
medical transfer. Whenever possible, senior medical staff will liase directly with the
referring medical team to check all medical details. We make the correct decisions
at the right time to ensure patient safety.

Medical Staff
All doctors are UK hospital specialists with post-graduate qualifications. In most cases
the doctor will be an anaesthetist with at least 3 years full-time experience in this field.
We believe that anaesthetists have the unique skills required to manage any in-flight
eventuality and they are the most appropriate specialists for intensive care transfers.
We have access to a large department of anaesthetics at a nearby major NHS teaching
hospital. Specialists in other branches of medicine such as cardiology, accident +
emergency and trauma surgery may also be used where appropriate.

Nursing Staff
Our staff nurses are at least 5 years post-basic degree and will possess a higher nursing
qualification. All are trained in advance life support (ALS). We consider it is important to
match the skills of the nurse to the requirements of the transfer and we select our nursing
staff for each trip accordingly. All nurses have undergone instruction concerning the demands of the aircraft environment.

Equipment
AirMed has invested in comprehensive monitoring and life-support equipment to meet
the needs of high dependency and routine intensive care patients. Our standards are
consistent with the guidelines set by the Intensive Care Society (Guidelines for the transfer
of the critically ill adult, 2002).

Record keeping and audit
AirMed are fully integrated with the NHS Thames Valley Critical Care Network (CCN).
All patient observations and clinical notes are recorded on the CCN report form. This
form provides patient information at handover, and a copy is also returned to the CCN.
This is the basis for audit and quality control. We are able to benchmark our performance
against other NHS intensive care units within our region. We encourage incident reporting
and we ensure patient safety is our main concern.
