Hospital transfer in UgandaMedical equipment

No matter the skills of the medics they cannot perform to the best of their ability if they do not have the best medical equipment (click here for a full list) at their disposal. AirMed has made considerable investment in order to care for even the most critically ill patients. This includes suitable monitoring equipment, from simple pulse oximetry to more complex multi-parameter monitors. With a selection of Welch Allyn Propaqs and MRL portable intensive care (Zoll M Series CCT) ITU monitors, this enables modalities such as invasive pressure measurement, capnography and 12-lead ECG recording. Dräger  Oxylog 3000 plus, 3000 or 2000 units provide ventilation, and Laerdal defibrillators, portable suction, Braun infusion pumps and Alaris Medsystem 3 volumetric pumps are carried according to patient need. To complete the suite of monitoring equipment, an iSTAT handeld arterial blood gas and biochemistry analyser is included.

Specialised medical equipment engineer Darren Stone of Medical Engineering Ltd maintains our medical hardware in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. Each of the pressurised aircraft are equipped with LifePort systems that provide a minimum of 3000 litres of oxygen and electrical power as well as a simple and comfortable patient loading system.

Alongside this hardware, nursing and medical kitbags with a full range of disposables and ancillary equipment are provided. Comprehensive drug boxes provide all requirements for the critically ill patient and include controlled drugs. Stock level is maintained via a drug supply contract with John Radcliffe Hospital pharmacy. In addition, the nurse bags contain a selection of drugs (e.g. analgesics, antiemetics and emergency drugs) that are covered by AirMed’s patient group directions (PGDs).
These PGDs have been developed in collaboration with an experienced nurse prescriber and empower our nursing staff to utilise a limited pharmacy in order to provide optimum safe benefit to patients. Kit bags are fully restocked after each mission and our Medical Director and Chief Flight Nurse continually audit this process; in addition, the medical department is fully incorporated into the company quality manual and is subject to regular assessment by the company quality manager.
